>> in this morning's medical alert, if you haven't gotten your flu shot yet, it's not too late but medical experts say all signs point to an especially bad season and early one for the flu. 11 news reporter kai reed has more. flu and the colder months always go hand in hand. but this season, the dreaded illness seems to be making a strong appearance early. >> we are seeing flu in maryland. we have been seeing flu since october of this year, middle of october, and that's earlier than we normally see. here it's in a sporadic, here and there. >> last year, the uptick in cases didn't start until february but now according to the c.d.c., the flu's getting its earliest start in nearly 10 years. >> it's earlier this year and more severe. >> the confirmed flu cases are from influenza a and b, h3n2,
7:18 am
the strain included in influenza a, was part of the particularly bad season we had in 2003 and 2004. that virus causes more severe symptoms. doctors say this season's seems to be a good match. >> we want people to know there is something you can do about flu to prevent it and that's get vaccinated and there's plenty of vaccine still around. >> of the healthcare institutions tracked by the state as of for 24, 2.1% of patients were seen for flu-like the state'selow baseline or average. the states hit hardest so far are in the southeast -- alabama, louisiana, mississippi, tennessee and texas. >> neighboring states, activity is increasing and we might expect to see increase in activity here. we watch that closely and want everyone to be aware of that so they can take appropriate actions -- getting vaccinated and if you get sick, stay home
7:19 am
from work. >> that was kai reed reporting. we're joined by gary cook, pharmacist at walgreen. thank you for coming in. are you seeing a rush of people who want the flu vaccine now? >> yes, in the last week or so, we have been seeing an increase in the number of patients coming in not only inquiring about the flu but also coming to get flu shots. >> what is your best advice to someone on the fence and beings i still get sick anyway. >> the best thing is not to wait. this is the time to get the flu shot. normally the flu generally peaks around january or february but as you said, on the c.d.c. is starting to notice a great upsurgence of flu illness at this time so we recommend people not wait and actually come into walgreens to get the flu shot. >> tell me about the study that walgreens recently did about the flu. >> back in the fall, walgreens
7:20 am
commissioned a consumer survey where they looked at candidates to see their opinions around immunization and there's a disconnect between consumer behavior and actual perceptions when it comes to immunization. a lot of people are aware of the importance of getting a flu shot but they're not actually going to have those immune zation done so this has reinforced the importance for consumer theation which is one of reasons i'm here today. >> so aside from the flu, i know you can get vaccines for other diseases and quite frankly save yourself suffering over the wintertime so what are your best recommendations? >> the best recommendation is to contact your walgreens pharmacist or any other healthcare provider. we are offering another service this year, as you get your flu shot, the walgreens pharmacist will offer an immunization
7:21 am
assessment where they look to see which other vaccinations you're a candidate for. >> you have flu, whopping cough, shingles, meningitis. everybody doesn't need everyone everyone of those. for shingles, people having a hard time finding it. who should get the shingles vaccine? >> right now the shingles vaccine is indicated in adults that are 50 years and older. however, the c.d.c. is recommending that anyone over 60 get the shingles vaccine. there are certain contraindications for getting the shingles vaccine and your pharmacist or clinician is the best one to go through those with that individual patient. >> we didn't have it on the graphic but pneumonia you told me before the segment is another one some should consider. who should think about that? >> those who, again, this is on a patient individual decision. patients 65 and older are the ones who get the pneumonia
7:22 am
vaccine but patients younger than 65 get the pneumonia vaccine based on their other health criteria they have with regard to catching pneumonia. >> and gary, with any of these shots, is there a concern you will actually get sick? will you get the flu or mild symptoms if you get the shot? >> there are some -- bear in mind that getting a vaccination, there's never 100% guarantee. however, we find the benefits of having the vaccine outweigh any risks. you do not get the illness from the vaccine. but you may have mild local injection site soreness, that type of thing or maybe a slight fever that can easily be treated with over-the-counter medications. >> thank you very much for being here. if you want more information, go to walgreens.com/flu. here's a look at events around town today.

7:32 am
now, extending until 11:00 a.m., so that's the biggest concern there. radar showing rain across the metro area, heaviest as shades of yellow near edgewood and chestertown. temperatures in the upper 40's, lower 50's, holding instead with rain in the area. >> time for a look at what's coming up on "meet the press." david gregory joins us live with a preview. what's on tap today? >> we're going to be talking about the fiscal cliff, are we headed over the deadline here? we're going inside the negotiations with two top lutz, senator dick durbin of illinois and congressman kevin mccarthy, one of boehner's top lieutenants. my sense from being on the hill this week is that a deal may be closer at hand, that republicans are willing to give on tax increases if they can get something bigger in the way of entitlement cuts on medicare. so i think that's where the negotiation is at this point. >> as all of this is playing
7:33 am
out, we've seen indications that people are positioning themselves for the 2016 presidential race, is that correct? >> well, one of the things that caught our attention this week as you look at the poll that came out about hillary clinton who is leaving as secretary of state and leaves at a time when a lot of people are talking about her runningour years from now. there's a lot of democrats who think she is taking steps necessary to do that, making the connections with voters and potential donors to position herself and she's certainly incredibly popular. her approval rating over 60%. those saying they would support a presidential bid at 57% according to a poll this week so that's where a lot of smart money is right now. >> and you mentioned earlier that a deal might be closer than we think. any more indications that the general public may not see that are going on behind the scenes right now you think are good signs? >> i think there's a lot of public posturing going on and one of the reasons why is when boehner and the president met
7:34 am
privately and were negotiating privately last summer over the debt ceiling they ultimately were not able to produce a deal that boehner felt he could sell to his caucus so you see a lot more of an outside game played here, going directly to voters, campaign-style events by the president trying to drum up support for his side of it so he can blame republicans if things go bad and i think that's what he's preparing to do. >> david, thank you so much. we look forward to "meet the press" today. you can watch "meet the press" later this morning at 10:00 a.m. right here on wbal-tv following 11 news at 9:00 a.m. >> two area families joined forces to help victims of superstorm sandy celebrate the holidays. yesterday they collected donations and stuff a truck full of toys. we first introduced you to sadey and tyler on 11 news last week. both attend school at st. kaz mer's and when they learned of the situation, they teamed up.

7:37 am
>> now, your 11 insta-weather plus forecast with meteorologist
7:38 am
ava marie. >> good morning. with atarting you off look at the radar and it's pretty messy right now. rain showers building from virginia into maryland and some of them are picked up in intensity right now. all the green showing up around the baltimore metro area but shades of yellow, heavier rain building in across the western part of the city. some of it down south near rock hall and most of this extending all the way back towards frederick so expect showers, some heavier in intensity, to move through in the morning hours and then showers becoming more spotty. across the mid atlantic, showers extend up into southern pennsylvania and go from new jersey into west virginia. this is a stationary boundary sitting right over the mid atlantic right now and this is causing the unsettled weather. because it's stationary, we're on the border between the cold air to the north and warm air to the south so we're in the middle
7:39 am
throughout the day. the front extends back into the plains as a warm front across oklahoma but here's the cold front sitting across nebraska and south dakota helping to produce snow across the northern the country. this is all going to move east. we're not going to get the snow but we are going to get a drop in temperatures and that's we don't look forward to in the next couple of days. currently 50 degrees at the airport, not bad to start off a december day. normally we should be in the 30's. 53 degrees downtown, cooler towards the north, 46 in westminster and 45 in parkton. the caveat is that temperatures won't change much into the afternoon. although it's mild now, it's relatively chilly later today relative to where temperatures normally warm up but we're going to stay instead throughout the day ranging from 48 to 52 degrees. scattered showers are possible at any time today especially the morning and watch out for fog on the roads
7:40 am
especially heading towards fedexfield. have rain gear handy. temperatures in the upper 40's, low 50's. showers could be around to the north throughout the day and then we take you into tomorrow where the cold front will be moving through by the evening hours which may spark a thunderstorm. it's behind the front tomorrow that we'll see a drop in temperatures. that takes us to the seven-day forecast with temperatures in the 60's tomorrow, dropping into the 50's the rest of the week. >> on a rainy day books are a great gift to give but also wonderful to give to kids for the holidays but fipgged -- finding the perfect read isn't always easy. barb is here with great ideas. you have a personality test that parents can take to find out what their kids like to read. >> yes, which reading super hero are you, you go on a book, it

7:42 am
>> exactly. the same kind of guy will love sports books so mike lupica is wonderful. this is "game changer" and ben is about 11 years old like doug flutie so when he wants to go for the quarterback position in the team, he's up against the big guy and up against the coach's son. who do you think gets the quarterback role? but a lot of stuff starts happening and belonger connector guys like to read about that and see what goes on on the team. now we'll kick over to the warriors heart. this is the guy i call seeker/leader. this is less of our population, just 12%. but this is the guy who wants to know what does it mean to be a great man, what can i do to make a difference in the world. in the "warriors heart" this is a true story about a guy who decided to become a navy seal.

he went from rhodes scholar to be a navy seal. what is it like to be a seal. >> to get kids to read fiction can be difficult. >> except for the last guy. "in a glass," a big part of the population. he likes humor, he likes anything intense, scary, thrilling. we're talking fairytale but not la la fairytale but blood, vomit and naked people. >> is that appropriate? >> absolutely. we must have naked people. what is life without it? this is for our last guy, the guy i call answer man. this is the bomb. answer man likes information but he also challenges. parents who have answer man, they know, every time they tell him something, it's, like, prove it to me, he's going to decide for himself. in "the bomb," this is the story of the atomic bomb, the scientists and the spies and it opens up in may 1950 with a guy

>> welcome back. joining us now from the baltimore humane society is jen swanson with a pet looking for a good home. >> this is bella, she's 5 1/2 years old, she's a hound and beagle mix, brought to the shelter when her owner became too sick to care for her. she's very emaciated. she came into the shelter like this. a forest home.or if we can't find her a forever home, we want to find her a home to fatten her up for the holiday. >> maybe the stress of the environment of the shelter is stressing her out right now. >> she's frightened by loud
7:48 am
noises, thunderstorms, so the kennel environment is stressful and she's not interested in eating so we want to get her into a nice home environment where she can watch the ravens game and she can eat some tailgating snacks and fatten up a little bit. >> so that's something good to know. maybe if you're not ready for a full-time pet, you can offer to be a foster for a pet. how do you do that? >> the foster program is great. we cover all of the medical expenses associated with the pet while you have them. if they're on prescription food, we will provide the prescription food. and you can sign up online if you if to our website, bemorehumane.org and click on forest a pet. sign up for canine or feline and you'll be contacted and we will set you up as soon as possible. >> is it she have to go to foster first before she can be adopted or if someone's interested, can they take her home? >> she can go straight into a

forever home. she's very curious, she's very good, walks on a leash, a great pet. >> friendly, coming up to people. she just needs stability in her life. >> she really does and she's had a tough life up until this point so we want to find her a nice stable home environment. >> how are you doing at the shelter? i know you were slammed throughout the summer. is it getting easier? >> we're getting out there a little bit more and getting more adoptions and more donations. everything happens with money so we are able to do a little bit more these days. >> very good. something for people to keep in mind. the baltimore humane society, and bella is looking for a nice meal and nice home. back to you. glad she came back out. >> she was scared. maybe she'll have a bite of brunch coming up next. right now, 7:49, 51 degrees on tv hill. coming up, in the kitchen with a special guest. >> and another look at the murky forecast.

good morning. we have a sweet treat. tell us what we're making. >> this is my great grandmother was a generation where she never wrote down recipes, had a certain bowl, put flour to here, sugar to here, mix it together and made everything from scratch so this is the recipe that we found to be the closest to her home made short bread. >> wow. ok. you said today, you didn't want to haul the mixer in here so we will go through what you would mix up to get the end product. >> it's a great day to hang out at home and make this recipe and enjoy them during the ravens game today. we'll just walk through this. >> looks relatively simple. >> it's so easy and looks so nice and you can take them to a house warming party, give them as christmas gifts. so many things you can do, eat them in the morning with coffee. >> why not? >> exactly, sweet treat in the morning to get you started but we start with a cup of sugar and
7:55 am
then three sticks of butter and cream that -- >> three sticks of butter for one batch. no wonder they're so good. >> it makes a lot. every once in a while, everything in moderation. cream those together and put in a teaspoon of vanilla and then you -- so you have 3 1/2 cups of flour. sift it in the sifter with salt. this is my grandmother's so i always feel like she's making the goodies with me. i treasure that. you mix that all together with the salt, cream that all together in the mixing bowl and then we get to the dough and so you want to put the dough in the refrigerator for 30 minutes and what that does, when you cream the butter, it then solidifies the dough a little bit so it's easier to roll out. we take the dough -- >> while you're rolling this out

here, hilary, let me ask you, now that the olympic mania has died down, what's going on with you these days? >> this summer it's so funny because people say how was your summer? and it was fine and they're like we saw you and that was london. it was great, though, it was a lot of fun and we're happy to be back. >> this has probably been refrigerated more than half an hour. >> refridge it overnight. >> it looks delicious. >> you can get little cutters or you can get big ones so the first time i made them i didn't have cutters and used a big biscuit cutter and they were massive but they were delicious and they have to cook longer but you leave them in the oven. these i left in for 15 minutes. the larger ones, 25 minutes. at 350. the recipe's on your website.
7:57 am
it's also on my website. >> very tasty. how many of these could your brother, michael phelps, eat in one sitting. what are your plans for the phelps family for christmas? >> we're staying in town which is really nice. my niece and nephew, we will all be together. it will be a lot of fun. >> that will be a big hit. >> yes. keep them occupied. >> good day for baking today, ava? >> yes, a good day to stay in the house. if you're heading to fedexfield, watch out, you need rain gear. rain in the forecast and temperatures near 50 at best. >> hilary, thanks so much for being here. >> thanks for having me. happy holidays.
